To Infinity and Beyond!

“All adventures, especially into new territory, are scary. “

Sally Ride

As the first American female to go into space, Ms. Ride literally blazed new trails for young women everywhere.  I was not alive for her first flight, but she changed the world by daring to go where no American woman had gone before.  What was truly amazing was that she wasn’t trying to change the world, she just wanted to go, so she did everything in her power to go.  She worked hard, trained hard, studied and did her duty superbly.

It is because of women like  Ms. Ride that it started to become common to see women in the math and science departments of universities.  Obviously, it isn’t just because of her, but it is because women during that time started standing up, showing the world what they could do in so many fields (business, politics, science, math, health, everything), and ensuring that future generations would not face the same barriers they faced.  Don’t get me wrong, there are still barriers, but these barriers are getting smaller everyday.

You now have test programs for women to begin serving on submarines, you have women marching into combat, and more.  One day, we will have a female President.  Women of our mothers’ generation stood up and used their voices to ensure that our world would be better.  I’m not saying everything is perfect and all is equal, but it is now our generation’s turn to carry the mantle, to stand and use our voices, our talents to make the world better for the generations of girls (and boys) that will follow.  And, at the end of the day, isn’t that every generation’s responsibility, to ensure a better world for their descendents than they have known?

I know Ms. Ride will find her way back into the stars, for it is a path she bravely charted many years ago.  I sincerely hope that she knows how many young women admired her, respected her, and viewed her as a role model.  My thoughts and prayers go to her partner and family who are dealing with her loss.  Please know that the world feels your loss and mourns with you and is praying with you and for you.

Until We Meet Again,

Nicely stated! She was such an inspiration to me growing up! I never really wanted to be an astronaut, but knowing that there were women out there blazing trails and accomplishing great things helped me realize that being female didn’t exclude me from doing what I wanted to do.
