Working 9-5… What a Way to Make a Living

Happy Monday everyone!  Whew, this weekend was a doozy for me.  As usual, I attempted to schedule too much into too little time.  However, one of the fun things that I was able to do this weekend was to go see Dolly Parton’s 9-5 at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia.  Abingdon is a quaint town about an hour from Kingsport.

The family and I headed up the road early enough to get some lunch before the play.  We ate at a cute soda shop, Pop Ellis Soda Shop & Grill.  I had an excellent sandwich, but my favorite part was the cookies & cream milkshake (yum!).

After enjoying lunch and a *fantastic* milkshake, we wandered around town for a minute.  There were about 20 people protesting something a little ways up the road (we didn’t get close enough to make out what they were protesting).

On our way back to the theatre, we walked by the historic Martha Washington Inn.  How lovely! It is always a treat to do dinner here!  We were going to a matinée today, so dinner was not in the game plans, but yum!

Upon getting to Barter we picked up our tickets and proceeded to admire their renovations.  A little history on Barter Theatre… it was started during the depression when food was obviously quite scarce.  Rumor has it that several actors made their way south to work and landed in Abingdon.  They traded their skills for food, thus the theatre earned the name “The Barter Theatre”.  Many famous actors and actresses have come through Barter in it’s history.  It is one of the last year-round resident actor companies left in America.  For more information on Barter and its history, check here or here.

The play we went to see was Dolly Parton’s “9-5”.  I have to say I had very high expectations.  First, I have grown up going to Barter and they always put on an excellent show… Second, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dolly Parton (For a refresher course on how much I love Dolly, check here)!  With those two reasons in mind, I was, needless to say, quite excited to see the performance… It was everything I expected and more!

So, if you are in the neighborhood, definitely make time to go see 9-5 at Barter, it is well worth your time and your money.  Well, I’m off to go enjoy this beautiful spring weather we are enjoying!!!

Until we meet again!
